Alessandria  and  its  Province 

    Alessandria  is  a  pretty  young  town ! It  was  born  on   May  3  1168  when  the  three  Consuls  of  the  pre-existent  village  were  joined  to  the  Lombarda  League  against  the  German  Emperor  Federico  Barbarossa .   

    Alessandria  was  a  typical  military  town , witness  of  many  important  battles  fought  by  famous  military  leaders , from  Federico  Barbarossa  to  Napoleone  Bonaparte  (Marengo  battle) .

    The  eighteenth-century  Town  Hall  (Red  Palace)  with  the  peculiar  feature  of  the  three  clocks  is  in  the  Liberty  Square . The  clocks  point  the  hours , the  lunar  phases  and  the  date . 
    In  the  same  square  is  the  wonderful  Ghilini  Palace .

      On  the  left  you  can  see  the  slender  Cathedral  steeple , 348  feet  high .
     A  typical  product  of  Alessandria's  craftsmen  is  the...hat !  Who  doesn't  know  what  means  "Borsalino" ?  The  factory  was  founded  by  Giuseppe  Borsalino  in  1857. Thirteen  years  later  a  million  hats  every  year  were  produced  and  exported  all  over  the  world !! The  Borsalino  was  known  as  the ... Rolls-Royce  of  hats !  Nowadays  it's  possible  to  visit  an  interesting  Hat  Museum  , witness  of  150  years  of  history .

     Another  interesting  town  is  Casale  Monferrato , as...young  as  Alessandria . Below  you  can  see  four  wonderful   Casale's  monuments .

    You  can  admire  on  the  right  another  Casale's....monument , the  Krumiri ! Wonderful  cookies  !!! We  remind  you  that  Monferrato  hills  are  also  part  of  the  Alessandria's  Province  and  we  can  find  here  big  wines  like  everywhere  in  Piemonte.

     Acqui  is  a  famous  thermal  Resort  since  the  Roman  period . Water  streams  out  at  75°C (167  F)! You  can  still  see  the  Roman  aqueduct  (on  the  left) .
  

    Valenza  Po  is  the  jewels  capital ! 20.000  people , 1.300  jewelry  workshops  exporting  all  over  the  world !

    Another...jewel  of  the  Piedmontese  industry  is  the  Lavazza  , famous  for  its  coffee  production , founded  by  Luigi  Lavazza , born  in  Monferrato  in  1859.

   In  the  Alessandria's  Province  bicycle  is  very  popular . That's  due  to  the  fact  that  here  were  born  some  of  our  biggest  champions . Maybe  some  bicycle  lovers  have  heard  talking  about  Fausto  Coppi !

    
    At  least  we  can't  leave  out  one  of  the  most  famous  Italian  writers , Umberto  Eco (do  you  remember  "Il  nome  della  rosa" ?) . He  was  born  in  Alessandria  in  1932 .
