Asti  and  its  Province

In  the  Middle  Ages  when  Torino  was  only  a  village  Asti (Hasta  Pompeia  for  the  Romans) was  a  rich  big  town .  Evidences  of  that  period  can  be  seen  in  the  red  bricks  and  the  yellow  tuff  of  many  old  houses.

All  around  the  Cathedral  (the  most  important  Romanesque - Gothic  monument  of  Piemonte)  we  can  see  many  wonderful  aristocratic  palaces .

On  the  left  the  romanesque  St. Peter  Baptistry  and  the  medieval  hall  of  the  "Palazzo  dei  leoni".

Benedetto  Alfieri  has  been  one  of  the  most  important  architects  of  the  baroque  period . On  the  right  the  Alfieri  Palace  courtyard . Vittorio  Alfieri (1749 - 1803), the  nephew  of  the  architect  Benedetto , has  been  a  very  important  poet  and  author  of  tragedies . He  was  famous  for  his  strong  will  : as  a  young  student  he  wanted  to  be  tied  up  to  his  chair  to .... study ! ( A  good  idea  for  our  children !).

In  the  center  of  Asti  , under  the  arcades , there  are  many  old  shops  and  coffeehouses  in  the  art - nouveau  style .        In  the  Asti  Province  there  are  many  wonderful  old  castles .

From  the  left : the  Cisterna  castle , the  Monastero  Bormida  castle , the  Montiglio  castle  and  the  S. Marzano  castle .         It's  possible  to  visit  these  and  others  castles  from  May  through  October .    The  guides and  the  owners  will  introduce  you  to  castles  that  are  at  the  same  time , house ,  ethnological  and  historical  museum ; others  that  have  wine  cellars , others  that  are  real  residences  with  family  heirlooms  and  relics , then  others  that  offer  the  chance  to  spend  a  few  quiet  hours  in  pleasant  gardens.
