Biella  and  its  Province

Biella's  Province  is  very  young ! Until  a  few  years  ago  Biella  was  part  of  the  Vercelli's  Province .

The  great  development  of  wool  manufactures  is  due   to  the  abundance  of  rivers  and  sheep .    Biella  is  famed  all  over  the  world  for  the  high  quality  of  its  fabrics .    On  the  left  an  old  factory  lying  beside  a  stream .

Biella  is  of  Roman  descent , like  the  most  of  the  Italian  towns , but  its  centre  dates  back  to  the  Middle  Ages ,  with  markets , palaces , arcades  and  wonderful  churches .

On  the  left  the  Saint  Stephen  Baptistry  and  the  high  Belfry  (X - XI  century)  in  romanesque  style .     They  are  a  witness  of  the  most  ancient  Parish  of  the  Vercelli's  Diocese  (IV - V  century) .

The  rectangular  plan  of  the  Cisterna  square  is  surrounded  by  arcades , the  peculiar  feature  of  the  oldest  commercial   town   center .        From  the  arcades  a  sight  of  the  wonderful  palace  of  the  old  family  Dal  Pozzo  Della  Cisterna

On  the  left  the  Renaissance  interior  of  the  Saint  Sebastian  Church.

Another  peculiar  feature  of  the  Gothic - Renaissance  Period  are  the  decorative  bricked  fascias  of  the  old  Biella's  palaces  (see  below) .

The  old  gates  of  the  town  lead  to  the  surrounding  country  (on  the  right  the  romantic  Andorno  Gate).

About  eight  miles  far  away  from  Biella  (at  3,900  feet  above  sea-level) lies  one  of  the  oldest  Marian  Sanctuaries  consecrated  to  the  so-called  Black  Virgin  . The  Oropa  Sanctuary  is supplied  with  more  than  300  modern  rooms  for  staying  pilgrims .

On  the  path  leading  to  the  Graglia  Sanctuary  it's  possible  to  try  out  a  funny  phenomenon , the  hendecasyllabic  echo !  It  repeats  words  with  eleven  syllables  like  the  longest  Italian  word  (pre-ci-pi-te-vo-lis-si-me-vol-men-te , that  means  "very  quickly" . Try  to  spell  it !!) .     The  same  phenomenon  happens  only  in  the  Grand  Canyon  (Arizona  - U.S.A.).

Grape  festival  is  a  travelling  show  through  the  villages  which  happens  yearly  between  August  and  October  months . Rich  in  events  and  meetings , it  offers  to  the  visitors  food-and-wine  sample  tasting , concerts , fireworks  and  the  typical  Barrels'  Race , held  in  Roppolo  village  (on  the  right) .
