Novara   and  its  Province

The  Novara's  Province  lies  close  to  the  Vercelli's  Province  and  shares  with  this  last  one  the  supremacy  in  the  rice  production .     On  the  left  a  white  farm  in  a  rice-field  where  at  dusk  thousands  of  frogs  strike  up  their  symphony . If  they  knew  that  the  fried  frogs  are  a  traditional   food  for  farmers , they  wouldn't  sing  at  all !!!

Novara   had  been   a  thriving  Roman  municipality  (Novaria)  and  has  always  been  tightly  bound  to  the  Lombardia  (Milano)  and  only  in  the  18th  century  it  passed  under  the  Savoia's  dominion .

Nowadays  Novara  is  a  quiet , elegant  town   . On  the  right  you  can  see   the  Martiri  square . On  the  backgroud  the  imposing  S. Gaudenzio  Basilica  with  the  characteristic  dome  built  by  Alessandro  Antonelli , the  same  architect  who  built  the  Mole  Antonelliana  of  Torino .

The  medieval  heart  of  the  town  is  the  "Broletto"  the  Law  Court  of  the  old  Municipalities  of  the  Lombards .

Coming  out  from  the  Broletto  we  meet  a  woman  biking . The  bicycle  is  very  popular  around  here . In  the  early  afternoon  the  town  is  very  quiet  and  Pippo  is  walking  alone  under  the  arcades . It's  time  for  this  elegant  dog  to  go  for  a  short  walk  and  for  the  Novara's  people  to  go  back  to  work !

Besides  the  famous  Novara's  wines  (Sizzano , Ghemme)  we  can't  leave  out  the  Gorgonzola  cheese  and  the  Novara's  little  cookies .

The  Gorgonzola , a  very  famous  tasty  cheese , was  born  on  the  border  between  Piemonte  and  Lombardia  in  the  10th  century .     Farmers  were  used  to  eat  it  with  the  polenta , it's  delicious !!

It  seems  that  the  Novara's  little  cookies  were  created  by  the  Nuns  about  the  17th  century . The  ingredients  are  very  simple  (flour , eggs , sugar  and  flavours)  but  the  true  recipe  is  a  secret .    In  1948  the  baker  Mario  Pavesi  started  producing  these  cookies  on  a  large  scale  with  a  slightly  modified  recipe . Nowadays  these  cookies  are  known  all  over  in  Italy  as  "Pavesini" .
