Torino  and ...

We'll  tell  you  now  something  about  the  city  where  we  were  born !       Torino , like  the  whole  region , is  pretty  unknown  also  because  of  the  reserved  character  of  its  people .       Torino  has  always  been   known   as  the  "living-room"  town   with   many  elegant  meeting  places  and beautiful avenues .

Torino  is  famous  for  its  uninterrupted arcades (over 10 miles!); they  are  a  unique  urban   feature  in   their  developement  along   streets , avenues  and  squares .     Porticoes  shelter  you  from  the  rain  and  sun   so  they  lend  themselves  to  a  walk , to  shopping  and  to  meet friends  in   the  elegant  old   cafès .

Torino's  people (about  one  million ) has always  been   busy , so  here  were  born  lots  of  various  enterprises : Social  enterprises Car  industries (FIAT, Lancia) Fashion   houses Film  industries Radio  and  TV Chocolate   industries Confectioneries       In  the  long  run  some  of  them (fashion , film  and  radio) moved  to  Milano  and  Roma .      Torino  has  also  many  green  areas . The  most  important  is  the  Valentino  Park  beside  the  Po  river .

There  are  two  very interesting  buildings     in  it .       The  oldest  and  most  important  one  is  the  Valentino  Castle  (on  the  left) built  at  the  beginning  of  1500 and  later  refurnished   from 1621 to  1669  in  baroque  style .

This Castle  has been  the  theatre  of  salient  dates  of  the  Piemonte's  history .    The  other  one , built  in  1884 for  the  Torino's  International  Exhibition , is a  faithful  replica  of  a  Medieval   Village  with  a  fortified  Stronghold .

An other  very  important  historical  place  is  the  Parliament's  hall  in  the  Carignano  Palace  where   had been   proclaimed  the  Italy's  Unification  in   1861 .     Not  many  monuments  of  the  roman  period    remained  in  this  area .    The  most  important are  the  Palatine  towers   that  were  the  gates  of  the  roman   town .

Torino  has  many  museums .    The  most important  of  them  is  the  Egyptian   Museum , the  second  in  the  world  after  the  one  of  Cairo and  is  famed  for  the  big  amount  of  mummies .   Another  historical  place  is  the  Royal   Armoury   situated  next  to  the  Royal  Palace .

Obviously  there  are  many  other  sights : Art  Galleries , historical   monuments  and  Churches .         We  can't  forget  the   Cathedral   where  is  carefully  kept  the  most   important  Christian   Relic : the  Holy Shroud !       At  last  the  typical   symbol  of  Torino : the  Mole  Antonelliana ! It's  a   building  that  was  born  as  a   Synagogue   then   finished   with  the    addition  of  a   high  spire  (550 feet). Now  includes  the  Cinema  Museum .
