Valle  d'Aosta

At  the  beginning  of  the  Valley  the  imposing  Bard  Fortress  is  watching  over !  It  was  build  in  the  X  century  on  a  rock  spur  beside  the  Dora  river .

Going  on  along  the  valley  we  can  see  the  severe  Verrés  Castle , an  imposing  rocky  cube  build  before  the  XIII  century .     Every  side  is  100  feet  long ! The  walls  are  6  and  a  half  feet  thick  and  completely  smooth !     Now  is  a  seat  of  a  famous  Carnival  Show .

Over  the  Dora  river  lies  the  Renaissance  Noble  Issogne  Residence .     In  1492  Charles  VIII  King  of  France  was  used  to  stay  there  with  his  Court . Ladies , Knights  and  ministrels  were  enlivening  the  wonderful  halls  and  the  magnificent  courtyard . Amazing  is  the  contrast  between  the  anonymous  external  look  and  the  elegance  and  richness  of  the  interior .

Going  on  to  Aosta , following  the  river , we  can  see  the  most  romantic  castle  of  the  whole  Valley , the  Fenis  Castle  that  you  can  admire  in  our  Homepage .     Aosta  lies  in  a  wide  hollow  two  thousand  feet  above  sea - level . The  origin  of  the  town  date  back  to  2900  B.C..

Aosta  reached  the  maximum  splendor  during  the  reign  of  Caesar  Augustus  (25  B.C.) and  its  name  was  Augusta  Praetoria  (on  the  left  the  Augustus  Arch  and  on  the  right  the  Roman  Theatre).     Aosta  was  called  also  "Roma  of  Alps"!

Through  here  were  passing  the  medieval  pilgrims  ways . The  Romea  or  Francigena  way  was  joining  the  North  and  the  Channel  to  Roma  and  Otranto (Puglia , South  Italy) , where  the  Crusaders  were  embarking  to  the  Holy  Land .

Along  this  ways  were  standing  the  "Hospitals" (from  Latin  Hospes = Host)  that  provided  rest  or  entertainment  for  travelers .     The  most  important  was  the  Gran  San  Bernardo  Hospice , the  Gate  to  Europe .     Everybody  knows  the  wonderful  dogs  bred  by  the  Monks  to  help  travelers  in  danger .
