Going
on along the highway , after Villa
Pallavicino (on the left) and its
botanical and zoological park , you arrive
in Stresa well known as "the
pearl of Verbano" .
Stresa is famous for its
natural beauties , for the Borromeo gulf
with its islands and for the
mildness of its climate .
Here North blends with South ,
Mediterranean nature is grafted surprisingly
on to Prealpine setting and vivid
southern colours merge with a
subalpine and , in some way , Central European
pattern .
Magnificent neo-Classical and
Liberty-style villas remind us of
the "Belle Epoque" when only
the elite had holidays . Among the famous
guests we remind you the Queen
Victoria of England , Arturo Toscanini , G. B. Shaw ,
Winston Churchill , Ernest Hemingway and
Stendhal .Recently also Helmut Kohl and
Margaret Thatcher have been bewitched from
this magic atmosphere .
Above in the middle you can see
Stresa and the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees ,
one of Stresa's many luxury hotels .
On the right the magnificent Villa
Ducale .
