Vercelli  and  its  Province

The  rice-fields  of  the  Vercelli's  area  are  a  vast  chess-board  of  water  sheets , cleverly  planned  by  the  monks , where  the  Alps  and  the  Monferrato  hills  are  reflected . Here , all  around  the  old  Abbeys , since  more  than  five  centuries  the  best  rice  is  grown .

Vercelli , the  European  rice  capital , is  also  rich  in  cultural  resources .      In  the  Middle  Ages  there  was  born  the  first  Piemonte's  University .    Vercelli  was  also  an  important  halting-place  of  the  medieval  Francigena  pilgrims'  way .   The  S. Andrea  Abbey  is  a  masterpiece  of  romanesque-gothic  style.

In  the  heart  of  the  Valsesia (North  of  Vercelli)  there  is  a  little  Holy  Land  corner , the  Sacro  Monte  of  Varallo . This  Holy  Citadel  was  thought  as  a  new  Jerusalem   by  Father  Bernardino  Caimi  in  1493 , for  all  those  people  that  were  unable  to  go  to  Palestine .

Three  centuries  were  required  to build  this  imposing  Monastery !  Fourty  five  Chapels  where  eight  hundred  statues  and  four  thousand  frescoes  represent  the  Passion  and  the  Death  of  Jesus . On  the  right  a  detail  of  the  Passion  of  Christ .

The  low  Valsesia's  area (like  the  Biella's  area) is  famed  for  its  wool  industry . Here  are  worked  the  best  clothes  known  all  over  the  world . Armani , Dior , Versace , Yves Saint Laurent , Ferré  choose  here  the  wool-clothes  for  their  famous  wonderful  creations !

The  Natural  Valsesia  Park  lies  at  the  foot  of  the  Monte  Rosa  Massif . This  area  is  characterized  by  the  Alpine  Flora  and  Fauna  and  by  the  settlement  of  the  Walser  community (on  the  left) .

On  the  right  you  can  see  a  tipical  old  Chapel  in  the  high  Valsesia  with  a  fresco  representing  the  Last  Judgement .

The  Sesia  river  is  a  true  paradise  for  canoe  and  kayak  lovers ! Here  will  take  place  the  European  championship  in  2001 and  the  World  championship  in 2002 .
