This  is  not  a  curiosity  but  certainly  a  very  interesting  subject  indeed , we  want  to  tell  you  something  about  our  Social  Saints . Not  everybody  knows  that  Torino  and  Piemonte  are  the  birth-place  of  great  Social  Saints  and  Torino  is  famed  as  the  "Town  of  Saints" !!  They  have  been  founders  of  charitable  activities  and  lived  among  the  people  satisfying  their  needs  with  the  tipically  piedmontese  concreteness . They  found  an  inexhaustible  source  in  their  love  for  God .    We'll  tell  you  about  the  most  important  among  them .

St. Giovanni  Benedetto  COTTOLENGO  (1776 - 1842)  was  born  in  Bra  (Cuneo's  Province) . He  discovered  his  real  vocation  by  a  dramatic  incident  happened  when  he  was  Vicar  of  "Corpus  Domini"  Church  in  Torino (on  the  right) . A  poor  sick  and  pregnant  woman  have  been  refused  from  a  tubercolosis  hospital  because  she  was  pregnant  and  from  the  maternity  home  because  she  was  sick ! Giovanni  Cottolengo  was  praying  before  the  statue  of  the  Holy  Mother  of  Grace  when  received  the  inspiration  to  create  a  home  open  to  everyone , whatever  disease  they  might  suffer  from , without  distinction  of  race  or  creed . He  founded  in  1832  the  "Small  House  of  Divine  Providence".

The  means  for  this  huge  enterprises  were  nearly  exclusively  a  limitless  trust  in  the  Divine  Providence  matched  with  constant  prayers  and  sacrifices . The  Saint  (and  his  successors)  never  refused  to  help  any  miserable  human  being , even  in  the  face  of  much  hostility  and  misunderstanding .     Today  the  "Small  House"  (fondly  called  "The  Cottolengo"  from  the  Torino's  people)  is  an  imposing  complex  of  buildings  where  all  is  work , prayer  and  charity , money  is  not  accepted ! Thousand  of  patients  are  care  for  by  nuns  and   volunteer  workers  of  both  sexes . Several  doctors  lend  their  work  free  of  charge  and  can  apply  the  latest  health  care  means . The  development  of  the  "Small  House"  has  been  prodigious , over  100  homes  operate  in  Italy  and  abroad  today .

St. Giovanni  BOSCO  (1811 - 1888)  was  born  near  Asti . He  understood  the  problems  of  the  young  people  of  Torino  at  the  dawn  of  the  Industrial  Revolution  with  all  the  social  issues  involved . In  the  course  of  a  few  years  his  tireless  activity  created  a  network  of  homes , colleges , schools , laboratories  and  recreation  homes  in  Italy  and  abroad , that  have  acquired  world  renown . He  was  called  the  "Apostle  of  Youth" .

St. Giuseppe  CAFASSO  (1811 - 1860)  was  the  Apostle  of  prisons  and  the  comforter  of  those  who  had  been  condemned  to  the  death  penalty . He  is  the  Patron  Saint  of  prison  Chaplains .

The  Holy  Shroud

The  Knights  of  the  Cross  and  the  Sword

All  Piemonte's  Provinces  had  Templar  settlements . Among  the  others  Abbey  of  St.  Michael  Archangel  (protector  of  pilgrims)  in  Susa  Valley .

The  famous  order  of  the  "Knights  of  the  Temple  of  Jerusalem"  had  existed  for  about  200  years , from  1100  to  1312 . When  the  Christians  lost  the  Holy  Land , the  Templars  withdrew  to  Cyprus  to  preserve  the  Holy  Shroud  which  is  now  in  the  Torino's  Cathedral .    Torino , very  sensitive  to  mysterious  events , became  a  centre  for  studies  and  research  on  the  Templars  but  few  documents  confirm  the  truth  of  many  episodes  attributed  them .

We  had  some  doubts  about  this  subject  but  it's  a  real  curiosity  anyway  and  we  felt  it  our  duty  to  tell  you  about  this  incredible  underground   Temple . Torino , the  "Magic  Town"

Some  people  say  that  Torino  is  a ... magic  town !  In  Europe  there  are  three  magic  towns  Torino , Lyon  (France)  and  Prague  (Czechoslovakia)  that  form  the  "Black  Triangle" !  A  friend  of  us  who  has  a  gift-shop  in  a  nice  square  down  town  was  hoping  that  the  ghosts  could  be  able  to  deliver ... packages  to  her  customers  but  unfortunately  it  never  happened !!!  Some  people  say  also  that  the  eyes  of  a  statue  in  front  of  the  beatiful  Church  of  the  Holy  Mother  of  God  are  fixing  the  place  where  the  St. Graal  ought  to  be  buried !  Everybody  is  free  to  believe  it  or  not !

The  only  certain  thing  is  that  Torino , in  1793  gave  birth  to  one  of  the  greatest  conjures  of  all  times , Bartolomeo  Bosco . Thanks  to  his  extraordinary  talent  the  theatres  of  all  the  major  towns  where  opening  their  doors  to  his  performances , a  thing  unheard  of  for  his  times . Magic  was  all  his  life ; he  performed  his  tricks  wherever  he  was , in  the  streets , in  the  taverns , on  coaches . He  was  very  popular  with  the  courts  of  the  Tsar , Emperors  and  Rulers  all  over  Europe .
