Walking  in  the  mountain  parks

In  Piemonte  are  many  protected  areas . The  oldest  Italian  National  Park  is  the  Gran  Paradiso (270  sq. miles  between  Piemonte  and  the  Aosta  Valley). The  environment  of  these  Parks  is  mainly  alpine . The  highest  Park  in  Europe  (15,000  feet)  is  the  Natural  Park  of  the  Upper  Valsesia  (Vercelli's  Province). The  biggest  Park  of  Piemonte  is  the  one  of  the  Argentera  mountain  in  the  Cuneo's  Province .

These  Parks  are  the  perfect  scenery  for  a  big  amount  of  animals , trees  and  flowers .  Below  you  can  see  a  golden  eagle , an  alpine  chamois , a  deer  and  an  ibex .

The  Fair  of  St.  Orso

He  was  used  to  distribute  "sabots" (wooden  clogs)  and  tools  to  poor  farmers'  families .     The  St.  Orso  Fair (January  30 - 31) is  one  of  the  oldest  Fairs  in  Italy , it  dates  back  to  a  thousand  years  ago!       People  come  from  Switzerland , France  and  Germany  to  be  mixed  with  the Valley's  people , singing , playing  and ... drinking  "vin  brulé", grappa  and  hot  spiced  coffee .

The  Fair  offers  various  kind  of  goods , specially  the  wood - carvers  manufactured  articles , the  Cogne  lace , the  woollen  Valgrisenche  clothes (drap) and  wonderful  Wrought - iron  articles .

In  Summer  many  breeders  are  using  to  lead  their  cattle's  herds  to  the  high  mountain  for  grazing  in  the  alpine  pasture  lands (alpeggi). So  the  cattle  feed  on  good  and  fresh  grass  doing  in  the  same  time  a   true ... physical  training !! For  this  reason  their  meat  is  lean  and  tender.   The  "naughty"  cows  have  a  bell  so  they  are  easily  traceable !   It's  so  nice  to  hear  the  typical  bells  ringing  when  you  are  walking  nearby  an  "alpeggio"!

A funny  competition  takes  place  on  late  October  in  the  Aosta  Arena , the  Queens  battle !  The  breeders  bring  their  best  cows  hoping  that  one  of  them  can  win  the  title  of  "Queen" . There  are  three  Queens , one  for  every  weight  category (from  about  1,100  to  over  1,300  pounds).

The  new  Queens  compete  in  a  bloodless  match  against  the  Queens  of  the  year  before . The  battle  is  an  exciting  show  and  the  people  cheer  warmly  the  Queens    on !

Ivrea  and  the  battle  of  oranges

The  Ivrea's  Carnival   has  a  very  particular  history . In  the  17th  and  18th  centuries  each  of  Ivrea's  five  wards  was  using  to  celebrate  the  Carnival  on  one's  own  .

That  was  obviously  causing  disorders . In  1808  an  alliance  was  imposed  by  the  French  authority : henceforth  a  single  city  Carnival  would  replace  those  celebrated  in  its  several  districts  allowing  at  the  same  time  the  people  to  deck  themselves  out  in  the  rig  of  the  Napoleon's  Army . A  feature  introduced  by  the  French  Revolution  was  a  red  woollen  cap  falling  over  the  right  shoulder . This  cap  was  known   as  the  "Phrygian  bonnet" and  was  a  Republican  symbol .

During  Carnival  time  oranges  were  thrown   from  the  balcony  against  the  people  without  this  Liberty  symbol ... and  surely  also  against  the  people  "with"  the  cap  but ... disagreeable !  Nowadays  orange  battle  is  fought  only  between  throwers  on  foot  representing  the  people  in  revolt  and  others  on  wagons  drawn  by  horses , representing  the  tyrant's  officers .

The  small  train  of  the  Vigezzo  Valley

The  Vigezzina - Centovalli  is  not  the ... Orient - Express  but  is  surely  one  of  the  most  picturesque  railways  of  Europe ! Since  1923  it  joins  Domodossola  (Ossola  Valley - Piemonte) to  Locarno , on  the  swiss  shore  of  the  Maggiore  lake . It  covers  a  distance  of  53  km  in  about  one  hour  and  a  half  running  through  wonderful  sights , old  villages  and  dizzy  viaducts . Very  beautiful  also  in  Wintertime .

It's  a  magic  relaxing  travel  because  the  train  can  stop  on  demand   to  allow  people  to  visit  villages  and  taste  the  delicacies  of  the  valley .
