Our
great Piedmontese writer , Cesare Pavese , says
"...a village means that you are not
alone , the knowledge that there is something
of yours in
the people , the trees , the ground , that is
there waiting for
you even when you are not there ".
Cuneo and its valleys , a border land that
has preserved its wonderful popular
expression . The "Baìe" or
"Abbadie" were congregations of young
people going back to medieval times . The
"Baìo" of the Varaita Valley (Carnival
period every five years) consists of 300
characters (male only) dressed
up in wonderful costumes and
commemorates
the expulsion of the Saracens . It's a
blend of history , legend and tradition . On
the left a typical picturesque headgear .
During the celebration of
the Patron Saint of Pontechianale in
the Upper Varaita Valley (10th August) the
whole alpine village springs to life with
the colorful costumes of the ancient "Castellata"
considered the most beautiful in the Alps .
Procession and celebrations are accompanied by
traditional Alpine music and dances . On the
right the wonderful costumes .
