Santa  Lucia's  Sanctuary

In  late  1200  many  floods  happened  in  this  area  and  the  little  Chapel  dedicated  to  St. Lucia  was  threatened  by  the  waters .    The  legend  says  that  a  little  deaf-and-dumb  shepherdess  had  a  vision , a  beatiful  Lady  told  her  that  the  Chapel  had  to  be  moved  to  a  grotto  on  the  mountain  .

The  little  girl  recovered  the  speech  and  ran  to  the  village   telling  everybody  what  had  happened !  A big  grotto  had  been  actually  found  and  around  it , with  a  lot  of  trouble , the  Chapel  had been  built  thanks  to  the  faith  of  that  poor  people .    The  picture  shows  the  Sanctuary ; the  left  side  is  the  oldest  one  and  the  open  gallery , on  the  right , is  more  recent .      In  the  grotto  you  can  see  on  the  background  the  imagine  of  St. Lucia  and  on  the  right  a  statue  reproducing  the  Virgin  of  Lourdes .

Mondovì  boasts  the  oldest  Publishing  House  in  Piemonte . In  the  old  via  S. Agostino  we  found  this  memorial   plaque  which  is  the  proof  of  this  very  important  event (1472).   We  think  that  a  Publishing  House  bears  witness  of  the  cultural  level  of  a  human  society .

Solaria

Solaria  is  a  latin  word  that  means  "sundial". The  gnomon  is  the  style  of  an  ordinary  sundial .      The  Gnomonics  is  a  very  old  art . It  marked  the  history  of  humanity  since  from  its  dawning , making  instruments  of  different  shape  and  dimension . It  was  strictly  connected  with  the  architecture , the  sculpture , the  painting  and  every  kind  of  decoration . It  contributed  also  to  the  science  development .       After  the  baroque  period  it  started  declining .       Now  at  the  threshold  of  the  third  millenium  this  old  art  is  once  again  flourishing .       It's  an  international  case  witnessed  by  the  growing  request  of  new  structures  and  of  repairing  the  oldest  ones .       We  thank  Lucio  M.  Morra  and  Fabio  Garnero  for  giving  us  the  pictures  of  two  sundials :  on  the  left  a  recent  sundial  on  the  front  of  the  Town  Hall  of  Piasco  (Cuneo  Province)  and  on  the  right  a  restored  sundial  of  an  old  Villa  in  Spinetta  (Cuneo  Province) .        You  can  visit  the  italian  site   http://www.solariameridiane.com

The  Occitani  people

People   of  the  Cuneo's  Valleys  have  a  peculiar  feature , they  speak  an  old  Provençal  language  really  incomprehensible !!  The  langue  d'oc  is  a  medieval  mix  of  latin , spanish  and  french  . In  south  central  France  "oc"  was  used  for "yes" ; in  northern  France  they  were  using  "oil"  (oui) . Visit  with  us  one  of  these  Occitane  Valleys , the  Val  Maira  .      The  langue  d'oc  was  the  Minstrels'  language . On  the  right  you  see  the  "ghironda"  that  was  their... guitar . You  can   listen   to  their  typical  ballads . We  hope  you  enjoy  this  old  music  played  on   typical  medieval  instruments .

Traditional  festivities

Our  great  Piedmontese  writer , Cesare  Pavese , says  "...a  village  means  that  you  are  not  alone , the  knowledge  that  there  is  something  of  yours  in  the  people , the  trees , the  ground , that  is  there  waiting  for  you  even  when  you  are  not  there ". Cuneo  and  its  valleys , a  border  land  that  has   preserved  its  wonderful  popular  expression  . The  "Baìe"  or  "Abbadie"  were  congregations  of  young  people  going  back  to  medieval  times . The  "Baìo"  of  the  Varaita  Valley  (Carnival  period  every  five  years) consists  of  300  characters  (male  only)  dressed  up  in  wonderful  costumes  and  commemorates  the  expulsion  of  the  Saracens . It's  a  blend  of  history , legend  and  tradition . On  the  left  a  typical  picturesque  headgear .      During  the  celebration  of  the  Patron  Saint  of  Pontechianale  in  the  Upper  Varaita  Valley  (10th  August) the  whole  alpine  village  springs  to  life  with  the  colorful  costumes  of  the  ancient  "Castellata"  considered  the  most  beautiful  in  the  Alps . Procession  and  celebrations  are  accompanied  by  traditional  Alpine  music  and  dances . On  the  right  the  wonderful  costumes .

A  funny  rustic  tradition

During  the  Lent  takes  place  in  the  Roero  (between  the  Langa  and  the  Monferrato) the  old  funny  tradition  of  begging  for ... eggs .    A  company  of  cheerful  fellows  goes  by  night  to  farm - houses , singing  and  playing  instruments  to  persuade  farmers  to  give  some  eggs .

It  is a  good  occasion  to  stretch  their  legs  after  the  long  Wintertime  and  it  is  also  a  real  festival  for  the  village  that  becomes  crowded  with  funny  people  dressed  like  monks  and  all  farmers  open  the  cellar  to  offer  wine  glasses  to  makeshift  singers .
