The  Piedmontese  word  "Minusié"  (Woodworker  in  English)  derives  from  the  French  language  and  has  also  been  synonymous  with  "minute"  or  "fine  woodworker"  as  compared  with  "mastro  di  grosseria"  or  "carpenter"  more  in   general . History  and  geography  have  always  tied  Piemonte  to  France , so  wood  technology  and  terminology  are  often  close  relatives  of  equivalent  French  expressions .        The  Woodworkers'  University  was  created  in  1636 , a  symbolical  date  as  the  University  as  a  body  for  professional  regulation  had  already  existed  probably  ever  since  the  13th  Century . The  oldest  regulations  whereby  the  Torino  Woodworkers  disciplined  their  activity  with  Royal  Assent  dates  from  the  mid  17th  Century .        Cabinet-makers  operated  side  by  side  with  woodworkers . They  can  be  defined  as  specialists  in  working  furniture  with  ebony  or  other  precious  wood  inlays  and  are  a  close  élite .        The  Woodworkers'  University  officially  ceased  to  exist  in  1844 .         Plans  are  under  way  for  opening  a  Woodworkers'  Museum  in  the  Stupinigi  Hunting  Lodge  (see  Torino's  surroundings)  where  all  the  pieces  of  collections  already  on  show  at  the  Torino  National  Library  and  elsewhere  will  be  transferred .

The  wood  craftsmanship  in  the  Monviso's  Valleys

There  is  a  land  where  wood  workmanship  is  a  true  art . Wood  craftsmanship  has  always  been  part  of  the  traditions  of  these  valleys . It  was  born  partly  because  in  the  long  winter  months  people  needed  to  find  an  alternative  to  farming  together  with  the  great  abundance  of  raw  material (the  Alevé   forest  is  the  most  extensive  Cembran  Pine  area  in  whole  of  Italy) and  partly  because  these  valleys  once  belonged  to  the  Marquisate  of  Saluzzo .    This  craftsmanship  was  producing  home  furnishings  and   furniture  which  was  both  sturdy  and  highly  practical  enhanced  with  decorative  effects .     On  the  left  you  can  see  a  wonderful  bread-bin  .

Gradually , with  the  experience  slowly  acquired , particularly  between  17th  and  18th  century (the  Piemonte  Baroque  period) furniture  making  came  to  focus  not  only  on  rustic  furnishings  but  also  on  stylish  furniture  for  both  nobles  and  the    bourgeoisie , and  it  was  usually  carved  and  inlaid  by  hand .     The  important  wood  crafting  tradition  has  led  to  the  development  of  the  industrial  production  (window  fittings ,  doors , wooden  flooring , etc.) and  of  several  important  training  institutes  ( the  European  Wood  Crafting  Training  Institute)  as  well  as  various  courses  on  carving  with  a  knife , a  technique  wich  is  common  in  the  Upper  Valley  area .

The  Piasco's  harps

In  the  course  of  centuries  the  artistic  heritage  of  the  Saluzzo's  area  has  been  enriched  by  the  works  of  outstanding  artist-craftsmen  such  as  Pascale  Oddone , a  painter  and  sculptor  who  was  active  in  the  period  between  1520  and  1540 , as  well  as  Michele  Todini  and  Gioffredo  Cappa   particularly  famed  for  their  fine  wooden  musical  instruments  crafting  art .  Carrying  on  this  tradition  one  of  the  most  important  harp  making  factories  in  the  world  (the  only  one  in  Europe)  is  now  located  in  the  small  center  of  Piasco  (Varaita  Valley) .

People  fond  of  pipe  organ  music  can  find  a  big  interest  in  the  rich  calendar  of  concerts  that  take  place  every  year  in  the  old  piedmontese  Churches .    Particularly  interesting  is  the  big  amount  of  old  pipe  organs  in  the  Canavese  area , very  well  shown  in  a  site   full  of  sounds  and  images .

Also  in  the  Cuneo's  area  there  is  an  old  tradition  of  love  for  ancient  music  and  for  the  restoration  of  old  instruments .    You  can  see  (left)  the  wonderful  pipe  organ  of  the  Sale  San  Giovanni's  Parrish  Church , made  in  1885  and  recently  restored .    In  this  Church  take  place  every  year  some  of  the  Summer  concerts  organized  by  the  Maestro  Riccardo  Vianello , Claudia's  brother .

Riccardo  Vianello  and  his  wife  Angela  live  in  the  old  medieval  village  of  Sale  San  Giovanni  laying  around  the  Incisa  di  Camerana's  Castle  (12th. century) .  On  the  left  you  can  see  an  old  print  of  Sale . In  1995  the  Maestro  Vianello  founded  the  "Cultural  Association  of  the  Friends  of  Sale  and  the  Castle" and  organizes  Summer  concerts  that  take  place  in  the  Castle , in  the  Parish  Church  and  in  the  old  surrounding  Chapels .

The  Sale  San  Giovanni's  Summer  concerts  are  a  pleasant  chance  to  meet  people  and  listen  some  good  music  in  romantic  places .    From  the  left :  a  concert  in  the  Castle's  courtyard , a   guitars  duo  in  the  Sant' Anna's  Chapel , a  relaxing  break  in  the  garden  of  the  Castle  and  a  concert  of  celtic  music  in  the  San  Giovanni  Battista's  Parish  Church .

Riccardo  Vianello's  wife  has  made  a  name  for  herself  as  a  painter . She  took  part  in  many  important  exhibitions  in  Italy  and  in  France  getting  very  good  reviews  by  the  critical  writers  of  the  main  daily  papers .    Her  work  is  inspired  with  elegance  and  fantasy  by  the  mediterranean  world  and  its  colours .

The  University  of  Gastronomic  Sciences

Do  you  remember  Carlo  Petrini , the  founder  of  "Slow  food" ? We  mentioned  him  in  "Sights" . We  want  you  to  know  his  last  achievement , the  University  of  Gastronomic  Sciences , unique  in  the  world ! Carlo  Petrini (on  the  right) and  his  staff  have  fulfilled  a  dream  and  obviously  the  University  lies  in  the  heart  of  the  Langhe  area , well  known  for  its  local  products (wines ,

truffles , vegetables , cheeses) close  to  Bra , where  he  was  born . The  old  Hunting  Lodge  of  Pollenzo (Cuneo  Province)  built  by  the  Savoia  family  in  1833 (on  the  left  you  can  see  an  aerial  view) , has  been  chosen  as  an  ideal  seat  for  this  important  project .       You  can  see  below  the  hall  and  the  restaurant .
