Torino and Piemonte have been famed
for their pastry industry ever since ancient
times . When writing of the Taurini , Plinio (I
Century A.D.) stated they were using the
seeds of the Alpine fir-tree mixed with
honey to make a sweet (called aquicelus) ,
maybe the forebear of today's nougat !
Desserts were usually served at
the aristocratic dining - tables but many
wonderful sweets were born from the phantasy
of country - women who were using every kind
of fruits to prepare desserts for their
families in the feast -
days .
