  North  of  Novara  lies  the  wonderful  Galliate's  Castle . Between  the  15th  and  16th  centuries  the  Castle  was  not  so  much  a  fortress  for  defence  as  a  sumptuous  residence  for  hunting-parties  and  entertainment . Here   in  the  years  1475-1476  Duke  Galeazzo  Maria  Sforza  would  receive  diplomatic  legations  while  the  various  Duchesses  would  give  banquets  and  balls .


   A  legend  relates  that  the  Castle  still  preserves  a  fabulous  well-hidden  ancient  treasure  that  Duke  Ludovico  Sforza , known  as  the  Moor , is  said  to  have  hidden  when  the  French  invasion  was  imminent . This  mythical  treasure  is  said  to  consist  of  a  vast  number  of  fine  gold  ducats , necklaces , precious  jewels  and  a  mountain  of  silver  coins . Although  many  searches  have  been  made  it  has  never  been  found .

   In  1849  near  Novara  occurred  a  famous  battle  for  the  Independence , where  the  Piedmontese  Army  was  defeated  by  the  Austrian  Army . Every  year  happens  a  faithful  revocation  of  this  historical  battle . 

    Even  the  revocation  of  an  antique  battle  is  today  a  reason  to  have  a  feast . Fanfares , people  in  old  disguises , antique  dances  and  games  which  come  back  alive  all  over  like  a  meeting  time  and  like  a  chance  to  cheer  given  to  everyone .

   Orta  is  an  antique  village  rising  on  the  western  shore  of  the  Orta  lake  in  front  of  the  S. Giulio  island . It  is  the  most  glamorous  centre  of  the  Cusio  area  , scattered  by  characteristic  streets  where  we  see  facing  buildings  that  come  from  the  Middle  Ages  and  from  the  Renaissance . On  the  left  an  old  square  of  Orta . Almost  irresistible  is  the  temptation  to  spend  there  hours  in  the  old  good  way  like  in  a  comedy  of  Goldoni .  


   The  island  of  S. Giulio  seems  to  be  completely  handmade  like  a  play  on  buildings . Meter  by  meter , century  after  century  men  and  other  men  ones  after  each  others , shaped  it  through  their works . Everything  is  compact  like  the  pieces  of  a  puzzle . On  the  island  there  rises  an  ancient  Church . They  say  that  it  has  been  built  by  S. Giulio  in  the  4th  century  A.D..
